Can more than one embryo be transferred...

Here's a post I recently posted on the Infertility Awareness Association page

Does any one know if it is ultimately our choice how many embroys they will put in at the clinic during IVF?
My understanding from the info session is that they will only transfer one is most cases, unless the embryos are poor quality, in which case they will transfer 2 sometimes.
However, I was speaking to someone who had IVF 2 years ago, she signed a form indicating how many embryos to transfer, and they had 2 transferred.
I also spoke to another friend who just had IVF done, and they would only transfer one, there was no form for her to sign indicating how many to transfer. She said that the doctor decides how many to transfer depending on the quality of the embryos, but most often only one.
I dont really understand how they can choose on our behalf how many to transfer. We are paying for it, and it's our bodies and choice...

  • Michelle Lyn Post We are supposed to have our own choice depending on age and quality, mostly 1 or 2, and depending on history, if you've had it done before or not and what the outcome was. If you are young, they will decide for you to only have 1 as more could lead to...See More

  • Valerie Fleisch In the form you indicate with how many you'd be comfortable with. It does not mean that they'll transfer that number. And in the end it's unfortunately not up t you - its up to the doc and mostly the embryologist and it will depend on your age, cycle h...See More

  • Carrie-Lynn Sedore Brandi ultimately everything will be up to you. It won't be a surprise the day of. Your dr will talk to you about it, tell you the grading and help you come to a decision. If they suggest 2 and you only want 1 they will do that. In my case I asked for 2 eggs both times and each time 1 took. I'm thinking if you and wishing you lots of baby dust

  • Carrie-Lynn Sedore Lol. I love how I say the opposite from Valerie Fleisch. This was my experiences 3 years ago and my experiences with Dr.foong. It was all a discussion and I was educated to make good decisions.

  • Valerie Fleisch Lol yeah...everybody probably has a different experience, depending on the doc and also their history. I cycled at 2 clinics in 2013 and this year and that's how it was for me. I think there has been a big shift of thinking in regards to multiples pregnancies in the past 1-2 years and docs really try to avoid them.

  • Dionne Louie Dillabaugh Hi there. I vaguely remember the form but I more remember them telling me we may possibly have the choice (based on our circumstance) to transfer 1 on day 5 (best case scenario they said) or 2 on day 3 but that they would make a 'recommendation'. In the end they recommended 2 on day 3 because if we waited until day 5, we might not have any embryos left to freeze.

  • Valerie Fleisch There is also a different way to look at this (when I started out I used to have the exact same thoughts as you Brandi; I see things a bit differently now) - what you really want is your doc to tell you that he/she only wants you to transfer one. Becau...See More

  • Tanya G Ivf My first transfer we were only allowed one. After that round ended in a chemical we choose to transfer 2 for our FET's. At first they were not for it, but then we talked at length about the risks of multiples and how putting 2 back didn't increase your...See More
